Every year, people look to be better than they were the year before. One of the most common resolutions is “getting fit”. Getting fit can mean something different for everyone. Most commonly it’s finally getting that summer body or losing those last 10 or more pounds that crept up over time.

January is known to be the most popular time to join the gym. Whether it be a goal of losing weight, gaining muscle, getting stronger etc. many people start the new year with the best intentions of getting fit. Although it is a great resolution to have for the New Year, it is expected that most people fall off the wagon by the time the snow starts to melt. One source showed that 4% of resolutioners don’t make it past January, 14% fall off in February, and close to 80% of people who joined the gym in January has quit within five months.

The trend of joining the gym is on the rise, but the amount of people sticking to their new year’s resolutions is still trouble most people go through. Here are some tips on how to stay on track in 2019.

  1. Write down your goals
  • Write a short-term goal like gym attendance consistency, drinking more water, or getting more sleep
  • Write a long-term goal like losing 30lbs, reducing blood pressure, or being able to do 30 push ups
  • Post these goals in a place where you can see them regularly
  1. Keep a food journal
  • When you keep a food journal, it helps keep you accountable for what goes into your body and may help you see patterns throughout your weekly diet
  • Use an app like https://www.myfitnesspal.com/ or other similar applications. This will help educate you in how many calories and macronutrients are in your foods.
  1. Get some help!
  • Gyms often offer free personal training assessments that can help jumpstart your journey.
  • Hire a Personal Trainer and get a personalized plan.
  • On top of all the amazing benefits a trainer can bring, they can help improve your chances of making it past the initial new year’s resolution hype.
  1. Don’t fall for fad diets
  • Whether it be the Ketogenic, Atkins, Paleo, etc. the best solution for someone just getting started is a realistic, sustainable diet that for most are as simple as gradually improving your choice of foods. Drastic changes often lead to failure. Small gradual changes in diet are best for long term sustainability.
  • Start with small changes like drinking more water, reducing added sugars, and eating breakfast.
